Are You Ready for an Online Class - Back by Request!

I was recently contacted by Jim Fatzinger, a Professor of Management from Metropolitan State University, who alerted me that a recording that I had shared over a year ago on my blog of an online student success workshop titled "Are You Ready for an Online Class" was no longer available for viewing. This was news to me -- what was also news to me was the fact that Professor Fatzinger regularly requires all of his hybrid and online students to view this video and complete a discussion question in response to its content prior to the start of each course. How fantastic is that? This is a perfect example of how educators can harness digital technologies to share content and widen the distribution of our content to more learners. This is 21st century learning!

After receiving Jim's email, I have been working diligently to resolve the issue with the video. I don't know why it was deactivated from my blog and I had some challenges reloading it but I'm hopeful we're back in action.

If there's anyone else out there who utilizes this video as a student preparation resource, please leave me a comment here on my blog so I know. Comments are very important to me so I can be aware of who is utilizing my resources. Thanks!

Overview:
This is a 60-minute recording of a live workshop I presented at Sierra College in October 2007. The workshop was offered to students interested in learning more about the requirements of learning in an online environment, how online learning differs from face-to-face learning and some of the typical characteristics needed for succeeding in online learning.

Michelle, this is an excellent resource. I'll tell my friends who teach online about this post.

Suggestion about the video: have someone with a website load it on to its own page, and then you can link to it permanently.

Hi John, I have the video shared on TeacherTube also as a more permanent option. The link to this version can be easily found in the left column of my blog's main page titled "More Resources for Innovative Educators." Thanks for your comment and for sharing my resources with others.

Hello Michelle,
I am an online student in the Master's in Nursing Education program at Michigan State University in Michigan. I listened to your video on "Are You Ready for an Online Class--Back by Request!" I thought it was informative and will be a great resource to share with my peer(as John S. posted). I agree with what you stated about what is needed to become an online student. Commitment and motivation are important elements needed to stay on track as you pointed out in your video. Thank you for sharing this information.

Michelle,
Nice presentation, having taken several online classes for both of my masters program i can see how important your presentation would be for students who are planning to take classes online. Yes it does take A LOT of discipline and self motivation; it’s you and the computer. Some days you have to "will" yourself do your assignments. The need for this way of learning is on the rise, therefore more prep work needs to be done by schools authorities in getting students ready to take online class.
